INTERACTION ACTIVITY

I liked the TimeToast from Miss Hasting´s blog. I have planned a TimeToast activity with my group about some of the most relevant events in the UK.

TimeToast UK

Genially - London

Genially London

Staging of activities that my pupils used to prepare the mini-project with Genially:

1. I tell my pupils the project that they are going to do using Genially.

2. I show them different Genially examples to give them different options of what they can do.

3. I divide the class into groups of 3 (five groups). There are different levels in the same group, so I decide who belongs to each group.

4. They decide what topic want to work about.

5. I tell them that they can use their own videos, but they do not want to record themselves (no videos, no audios) 馃様

6. To finish the project, they have to do a presentation in front of the class (this is a problem, because nobody wants to talk in English).

Reflection on the use of Genially in the student´s learning experience:

I have enjoyed the use of this application, but some of my students have felt demotivated. Their level of English is very low and this project required a little bit more effort than the Storyjumper, for example. Anyway, they have reached the objectives, and they have known a different way of making presentations. I think that I am going to use this tool to work in class when presenting a new topic.

Storyjumper: The brave dog

STORYJUMPER

I have chosen Storyjumper because my pupils are at Primary School.

I made three groups of five children. I gave them different options to create the story (due to their low level, they don´t know how to write correctly), so I provided them with several beginnings, a lot of cruxes and some endings. This way, they configurated their own story. I told them to use their imagination and try to make unique stories.

The specific learning objectives for this activity were:

- To learn about the different parts of a story.

- To create a story that makes sense.

- To know a new tool for writing.

My pupils were amazed by this tool. They had never seen it before, and they enjoyed creating their own stories. It is very intuitive, has lots of different images to use and they love using the computer. We did all the work in the classroom (just to make sure that everybody could take part in the task).

All the class helped to evaluate the projects using a simple rubric, so all of them got feedback.

Now that all the projects are finished, we are going to share them with other groups of the school. It will be a great example for them to create their own books.

EDPUZZLE

馃З  EDPUZZLE 馃З

I have chosen a video about Present Simple because it´s what I am reviewing with my Year 6 pupils right now. This video is short, not boring, colorful and, very important for my pupils, in Spanish. As I previously said, their level is very low, so I need to use L1 and L2 all the time.
First of all, I sent the video via Classroom, and I told them that they had to watch it at home and write down some notes about important things from the video.
In the classroom, we watched it and they did a brainstorming.
In groups of 4, they had to organise the information in this way: uses of the present simple, structures (affirmative, negative and interrogative), third person (singular), grammar rules when adding “s” and examples of present simple sentences.
The learning objectives for this session were not only to review this tense but also to learn grammar rules when adding “s” to the verb. There is a new boy in the class, so this activity has helped me to know about his previous knowledge in this topic.
The high points of the experience were that my pupils were highly motivated (they love the use of ICTs when learning). They had never used Edpuzzle before, so they were happy to discover a new way of learning. Videos are always a great option to engage pupils. There are some students that show low motivation; they have retaken the academic year, come from unstructured families and don’t like school. With this activity, they have participated and learned a lot, so as a teacher, I´m very happy.
Next time I will try to make sure that everyone has access to the internet and I will choose a shorter video.

Timeline of Shakespeare's Life (created with Timetoast)

Timeline of Shakespeare's Life

The learning objectives of this activities were learning about Shakespeare´s life by using TimeToast to create a timeline.

My pupils have enjoyed this activity since they haven´t used this tool before and they have found it easy to use and motivating. One of the advantages of TimeToast is that they can edit their entries if they need to add a picture or a date.

To set up the activity, I told them that we were going to celebrate World Book Day and commemorate Shakespeare´s birth and death. I explained that they had to search for information about this author and retain the most important dates of his life. They used the tablets to look for information (individually) and then we made groups of four pupils. They agreed which information wanted to include in their timelines and started to create it.

The problems that we had were the connection to the internet and the fact that my pupils are very dependent (their academic level is lower compared with pupils from other schools). For that reason, they only chose four or five important dates.

For the next time I would give them a text previously chosen by me, highlighting the most important ideas.

TimeToast helped me to achieve my learning objectives in different ways:

- Pupils felt motivated and engaged with this activity.

- They learnt a different way of organizing information (it will help them to study about any topic).

- As they made a “competition” with the other groups, they did their best to do their timeline.

- My students really learnt about Shakespeare´s life and his importance.

Finally, they did a short presentation of their timelines to the rest of the class, so they also developed the communicative competence. Now, they want to create another timeline for the next topic that we are going to see in class.

Reflect of Reading habits

Reading is a pleasure for me. The image of a mother/grandmother reading with a child made me remind how I started to love reading; my father always had a book on his hands and I imitated him.
I usually read in different formats: paper, online, e-reader… but lately I use online sources. I prefer paper -it has something romantic that cannot be replaced with technology- but it is very useful to access to any kind of text (educational, news, entertainment…) from anywhere. You only need an electronic device and internet connection.
Depending on what I need, I choose a different kind of text. I prefer reading novels in my mother tongue, but I use English when searching for information related to my work. It is great to be able to use two different languages: results are wider and the probability to get what you need is higher.
We can observe in the images that there are different types of readers: some people reading for pleasure, other reading in an educational context (school), a group of a reading club… Some of them did not choose the books themselves (teachers did it for them), but there are many readers that probably decided what they wanted to read.
I used to read two or three books per month, but now, due to the lack of time, I barely read one.
